KBHN alumni researchers and trainees led a timely plenary on the gut biome and the effects of prenatal alcohol exposure at the 2019 International FASD Conference in Vancouver. Network Investigator Joanne Weinberg offered the introduction, positioning the session entitled “Intrauterine Microbes: Missing or the Missing Link?”
Dr Weinberg read from a range of media reports highlighting the growing body of research shedding light on the importance of the microbiome, described in a 2018 article in The Guardian as “the vast ecosystem of organisms that lives in our digestive system might be as complex and influential as our genes in everything from mental health to athleticism and obesity.”
A video of the biome plenary, along with five other conference sessions has just been posted on UBC’s Interprofessional Continuing Education website along with slide decks shared by individual presenters.
