Dr. Yager’s recent research focus is on the effects of age on stroke injury and outcome. Findings showed that the newborn brain is actually more susceptible to injury, but that it is much more capable of functional recovery. Currently they are looking into the underlying pathophysiological causes and will try to determine if there are specific genetic triggers. Other areas of interest are the determination of safe and useful neuroprotective agents in both the mother and fetus. They have developed models of intra-uterine growth restriction and hypoxia and are now in the stages of testing a host of neuroprotective agents that will be safe, but will provide enhanced endogenous anti-oxidant capabilities to prevent cerebral injury.
