SFU COOPERATIVE EDUCATION and CANADA SUMMER JOBS PROGRAMS

The Simon Fraser University (SFU) Cooperative Education program provides students with the opportunity to gain real-life, paid work experience to enhance their time at the university and utilize their classroom learning in an applicable workplace setting.

The Canada Summer Jobs Program is an initiative of the Youth Employment and Skills Strategy of Service Canada, which aims to support young Canadians to develop the skills and gain paid work experience to successfully transition into the labor market. In 2020, the program/position transitioned from a full-time summer term to extend to a year-round position, in light of the challenges of COVID-19 restrictions, offering flexible part-time employment during the academic school year to allow students the opportunity to simultaneously work while also attend classes.

Term: October 19, 2020 – March 12, 2021 (approx. 280hrs)

BIOGRAPHY

Malcolm Richards is a 3rd-year Communications Major with Simon Fraser University and has continued to study various marketing techniques and political economy. He is a research and training assistant with KBHN as part of the Canada Summer Jobs and SFU Communications Co-op programs.  Malcolm joined the KBHN team and immediately started contributing graphic design support and developing publication quality materials for the KBHN 2020 virtual Conference and specifically for the Training Program events at the conference.

He aims to use this new position to advance his post-graduate career. As part of this position he is expanding his skills in strategic communications for the training program and the PART Trainee Committee. He using his skills in standard platforms for data collection and analysis of Trainee network metrics and community participation. Malcolm will also be honing his skills as a communicator in the development of content for the KBHN Training website and program news & announcements through social media channels. While this is his first professional employment he intends to work to the best of his ability as he continues to learn.
