Neuro Nexus is a University of Calgary endorsed organization that organizes a Health Hack Competition every Fall. This year, Neuro Nexus will be a virtual hackathon program designed to spark collaboration across disciplines and tackle complex challenges in brain science and mental health. We connect experts in frontline, clinical, and academic practice with motivated, talented students to develop technological solutions over a fast-paced 6 week competition. Neuro Nexus will facilitate 40+ projects across the province this year in our largest competition yet. In previous years, we have secured >50K in awards, >190 innovators and 20 prototypes.

Neuro Nexus Process

Neuro Nexus Process

Do you know of a neurological or mental health challenge that needs solving?

First, we are recruiting Challenge Champions, healthcare stakeholders (clinician, nurse, patient, researcher, etc.) who submits a specific problem in healthcare/health research to our competition. The challenge champion will guide their innovator team throughout the competition, providing frontline insight and ensuring the solution does in fact solve the problem. We want stakeholders to submit challenges relevant to Commercialization and Community, Research and Education, and Industry (e.g. device to track tics in individuals with Tourette’s Syndrome using EMG). Challenges can be submitted until September 19th 2020 at https://neuro-nexus.ca.

Second, we are recruiting Innovators, who are technically proficient individuals/students from a multitude of backgrounds (Engineering, Computer Science, Business, Sciences, Medicine, etc.) to address challenges in brain science and mental health! During the 6-week program you will work to solve a problem that interests you on a multidisciplinary team of 4-6 individuals and a ‘Challenge Champion’ that is an expert in their field. You’ll get to apply your knowledge, learn new skills, collaborate with individuals outside of your field, develop a functional prototype (e.g. wearable EMG-triggered neuromuscular electrical stimulation glove for kids), and compete for awards! Innovators can apply until September 26th 2020.
